New InVECOF-related publication on tailoring Alumina/YAG fibres for oxide CMCs
New research involving partners from the InVECOF project has been published in Open Ceramics, presenting advances in the development of Alumina/YAG fibres for creep-resistant oxide ceramic matrix composites (O-CMCs).
The work brought together researchers from the Fraunhofer Institute for Silicate Research ISC and the Institut de Recherche sur les Céramiques (IRCER). The Alumina/YAG fibres were designed at IRCER and produced in collaboration with Fraunhofer ISC, with the aim of developing fibres suitable for creep-resistant O-CMC applications.
Tailoring fibre properties through the sintering process
The research covered the development process from precursor synthesis through to the optimisation of sintering parameters. The results demonstrate that the grain size of dense Al₂O₃/YAG ceramic fibres can be controlled through the sintering process, enabling their mechanical properties to be tailored.
By adjusting the sintering temperature, time and heating rate, the researchers were able to obtain fibres favouring either higher tensile strength or higher creep resistance. This demonstrates the importance of carefully controlling processing conditions when developing ceramic fibres for demanding O-CMC applications.
The publication is also an example of the collaborative research enabled through InVECOF. Among the researchers involved were Lena Glaser, Ralf Herborn and InVECOF coordinator Arne Rüdinger, together with Elodie De Sousa, Jenny Jouin and Samuel Bernard.
The results contribute to InVECOF’s work on the development of advanced oxide fibres and provide further insight into how processing parameters can be used to tune fibre properties for future ceramic matrix composite applications.
