InVECOF at HTCMC-12: Advancing the dialogue on high-temperature ceramic composites
Advances in high-temperature ceramic composites depend not only on new materials and processes, but also on sharing, discussing and critically assessing new findings within the international research community.
This exchange was at the heart of the 12th International Conference on High Temperature Ceramic Matrix Composites (HTCMC-12), which took place in San Diego from 31 May to 5 June. Held every three years, the conference provides an international forum dedicated to ceramic matrix composites and brings together researchers and experts working across the field.
Fraunhofer Institute for Silicate Research ISC, an InVECOF project partner, contributed to the conference through three presentations from the Fraunhofer Center for High Temperature Materials and Design HTL, including two invited talks:
- “Environmental barrier coatings based on rare earth silicates”, presented by Jonathan Maier, Christian Eckardt, Joachim Vogt and Alexander Konschak.
- “Integrated development of oxide and nonoxide ceramic fibres from precursor to pilot scale at Fraunhofer ISC Center HTL”, presented by Jonathan Maier and InVECOF coordinator Arne Rüdinger.
- “Corrosion of BN/SiC Coated SiC Fibers in a Silicon Melt Infiltration Process”, presented by Jens Schmidt, Alexander Konschak and Jonathan Maier.
Together, the contributions addressed key challenges across the ceramic composite value chain, ranging from material design and scalable fibre development to coatings and process-related degradation mechanisms. A common focus was the development of materials and processes capable of delivering reliable performance under extreme conditions.
For InVECOF, participation in international scientific exchanges such as HTCMC-12 provides an important opportunity to place the project’s work within the wider development of ceramic matrix composite technologies. Discussions with international experts in fibre-reinforced ceramics also help connect research developments with application needs and identify remaining challenges on the path towards industrial use.
By contributing to this international dialogue, the InVECOF partners continue to strengthen the exchange of knowledge around advanced ceramic composites and the technologies needed for their future applications.
